Hey guys recently I have figured out my iMac is dead. I could fix it with a large sum of cash. The iMac's problem is that it has a blinking question mark inside a folder at boot up. I heard that means my Hard drive is dead. So my iMac was my animation computer which alot of my files on it. I'm on my mom's computer right now. But I am very pissed off about this situation.
Guys this might mean goodbye. If I get enough cash to fix or buy a new one, then I could animate again.
I have 680 dollars right now but I wanna get a new one because I'm afraid that the repaired iMac would break again. So you won't be hearing from me for a while.

I'm sorry to hear that. I suppose iMacs cant self repair themselves by booting to an alternate drive and carefully attempting to recover files from the main drive.

I had a Windows XP, it was really crappy, and slow (virus's, etc.).
Now it won't even turn on.
We got a New computer, and...wow.
I had no idea how crappy of a computer I had.
This new computer can actually play games in 3-D ^_^

Can't you just... replace the hard drive? I had a laptop 2 years ago and the hard drive went out on me. But what I did is just buy another one for 100 bucks (40 gig) and installed a new OS on it. After that, it worked fine. Then a year later the monitor went out so I said "fuck it" and just gave up on it. I don't know what the hell they're charging you for if it's gonna be more than $600.00 dollars. That must be one hell of a hard drive :o

I realize its not my place to say this, having a laptop Mac and a Windows PC, but... well if asked I would say that if you can pump up a windows with the required amount of steroids, it would easily overcome a Mac no matter how much you mod it, then being fast and more visually inclined and also more stable. As a whole,windows is shit. but if you do backups and treat it like you would a bitchy girlfriend,it will never take too much money to fix. But if a Mac says its done,its pretty much done, with little to do to fix it. not only that, but while windows can be modded and pumped up and stuffed with so much crap Bill Gates wouldn't recognize it- A Mac starts out good,but is either surpassed so much as to be completely obsolete, or as in your case completely gives up.
Sorry for the long comment. I dont even really know how I got here. just a nerd hoping to help. If you PM me, I could send you some models worth looking at. Im rich and spoiled,but at least im knowledgable.

You could try to get your files like that, or at least possibly get an idea what the error might be

Don't worry if it can't be fixed. There is always a way to restore your damage. Try accessing your harddrive from another Mac and save your files. Then just get a new Mac I guess or get a new harddrive. Since you saved your work. Anyway just relax.

its not really the imacs fault, the i mac itself should be fine. Its the hard drive, the hard drive has this sort of needle on it, and when something happens to the needle, well, the hard drive goes..well, dead. So dont blame the problems on the mac itself. besides, these things happen rarely. But look, shit happens. What are you gonna do? Both Mac and Windows arent perfect...especially windows. But whatever, i tstill love mac. Peope dont phase me, and i wouldnt get in a fight over it with other people.
And if you read JohnnyUtah's page, the creator of tankmen, USES A MAC.
Also, it gets a little annoying after the goddamn 3rd time people use this post as a "Macs suck" thing.
well how old is your imac if it is new this would suck like hell but all you windows fanboys remember. the avarage windows life span is about 18 months and you get shitty software for it.
Only thing i can say is that repairing a mac isnt worth it(bcus it is too expensive),so i would buy a new one
i'd have to agree with everyone who says replace the harddrive. Harddrives are really inexpensive now a days.
